Mixing

Squeak Squad has 3 types of mixes with different ways of triggering them.

Traditional Mixing

Like in most other Retro and GBA titles, inhaling 2 enemies triggers a roulette once swallowed. The roulette starting point is always the same depending on which enemies you swallow.

Bubble Mixing

Bubble mixes (not to be confused with "?" bubble mixes), are triggered by combining 2 ability bubbles in your Copy Palette. Unlike the other conventional mixes, this type of mix cannot be controlled and will simply pick an ability from a limited pool of options.

Keep in mind that if you don't release the stylus and instead shake the bubbles once they are paired, it will change the pool of options. This can be used for backups or in 100% routing, but overall in Any% be mindful not to accidentally change the default pool. You can ultimately shake through 8 different pools, which will progressively play a different note in the musical scale and glow a different color.

The abilities for each pool look like this: [1]

  1. (17/18%): Cupid, Hi-Jump, Parasol, Tornado, Wheel, with remainders
  2. (17/18%): Bomb, Cupid, Cutter, Laser, Ninja, with remainders The following pool's remainders are just sleep:
  3. (45%): Bomb, Fire
  4. (90%): Ice
  5. (45%): Beam, Spark
  6. (45%): Cutter, Sword
  7. (20/25%): Bubble, Animal, Metal, Ninja
    1. (20%): Bubble
    2. (10%): Ghost, Magic, Metal, Sleep, Throw
    3. (7%): Animal, Ninja
    4. (5%): Hammer, UFO, "?"

(?) Bubble Mixing

"?" Bubble mixes, or just ? mixes, are triggered by using a "?" Bubble in the Copy Palette. They are similar to Traditional Mixes in which they cycle through a set roulette of options. However, the main difference is that the starting point is completely random. This means that in order to land on your desired ability, you cannot use the same techniques. Most runners choose to look out for certain anchor abilities to keep track of where in the roulette they are.

For example, by far the most mixed for ability in Any% is Candy. Runners will thus pay attention until Laser appears. From there, they can react and then time a tap in order to land on Candy.

If that anchor ability leaves a runner too much or too little time to react, they can also choose to add complementary anchor points. For example, some runners instead look out for the more vivid Ice and Bubble abilities, and then use the following Tomato to gauge their timing.

The best way to practice this kind of mix is to go to the World 2 boss room and farm "?" Bubbles. Considering the varying amounts of input lag you can experience as well as the difficulty of actually mastering this kind of mix, it's better to avoid relying on these mixes if possible, or atleast familiarize yourself with friendlier routes that offer alternative options and backups.
